Meet Our Decorators

Sue Major
Chambersburg, Pennsylvania

Background:
“While my educational background was in business, I took interior decorating courses as electives as it was something I was interested in.  After marrying, I was a homemaker/mother for the next 22 years, decorating my own home as we moved around the country, including a stint in England.”

Personal Life:
“I have been married to my husband, Bert, for 37 years and have three children and four grandchildren.  I enjoy gardening, painting and bridge.”

Reason for starting an interior decorating business:
“My third child was in high school and I was looking for a business that my husband and I could work together, as he was tired of the corporate life he was leading....  A friend told me about Interiors by Decorating Den.  I decided it was a business I could do, and Bert would find another business for himself.  The business had a pretty fast start when a large commercial contract was awarded to me and Bert decided just to help me until I got through that.  It’s been 15 years and he’s still helping me....”

What Sue likes best about running her Interiors by Decorating Den franchise:
"Flexibility has been one of the best things.  Personal satisfaction and recognition in the community is another.  We live in a small town and it is easy to become well known.  Being able to call other decorators for advice is invaluable as well."

Most memorable moment:
“Winning Dream Room four times has been one of the most memorable moments!  I also enjoy the association with other decorators around the country and look forward to seeing them at the various conferences and training events we attend.”

Business Goals:
“I would like my business to continue to be successful and to be able to ease up in the next few years.  I have an administrative assistant, a part time decorator and two other decorators....  Having one of our decorators take over the bulk of the appointments would be great; however, that seems a few years down the road.”

Advice to those considering entering a career in interior decorating:
“Interior design is not a part-time business.  It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to be successful.  I think self-motivation is one of the most important traits, although organizational skills are right behind that.”

Kris Miller
Austin, Texas

Background:
Kris got a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Texas in 1992.  Her career in Human Resources, first with Andersen Consulting then with Motorola, was augmented by night classes in design at UT.  Kris worked evenings and weekends as a decorator for a local IDD business before buying her own franchise in 1999.

Personal Life:
Married Chris about 8 years ago, (“the ‘unofficial President’ of my IDD fan club!”) and they are the proud ‘parents’ of a black cocker spaniel, Petie.  Kris’ hobbies include golf, antiques and decorating her *own* home!

Reason for starting an interior decorating business:
“I’d simply grown dissatisfied with my HR career.  My work was incredibly demanding yet not fulfilling.  So I decided it was time to be true to myself and take a risk on happiness!”

What Kris likes best about running her Interiors by Decorating Den franchise:
"I opted for a IDD franchise because it offered a solid operating system, a strong network of enthusiastic franchise owners, and a concept that I believed in.  My work is finally in alignment with my personal passions and values.  I absolutely love being involved in the home decor industry, dealing with such beautiful products.  It’s very satisfying to know that the work I do enhances my clients’ homes and contributes to their overall enjoyment of life, too.  One final advantage ... working for myself provides me independence, control, and a real sense of ownership."

Most memorable moment:
Kris’ first photo shoot happened after she’d been in business for about a year.  “The shoot was really my first opportunity to *capture results* of my work and share those results with family, friends and other clients.  It was so rewarding to see the images of my first big project and think ... ‘Hey, I did that.  I really CAN call myself a decorator!’”

Business Goals:
After setting goals in her first year of business based on survival and sales volume, by year three, Kris is ready to grow her business.  She recently hired a part-time assistant and would eventually like to add at least one decorator to her staff.

Advice to those considering entering a career in interior decorating:
Three things:  Be sure you put strong systems into place for customer service, financial management, and marketing.  Think and operate like an entrepreneur, and master the technical knowledge of interior decorating, seeking guidance along the way.  And don’t forget that your work should be a reflection of your client’s lifestyles and preferences.

Peggy Spitaletto
Plano, Texas

Background:
Peggy was a physician’s assistant in a cardiology office.  She moved to Texas and wanted something to do that was not in the medical profession.

Personal Life:
She has been married for 36 years and has three children and seven grandchildren, and loves traveling and reading.

Reason for starting an interior decorating business:
Peggy started as a decorator for a franchise, and wasn’t looking for a business, but she “got off to a very good start and it was the only thing to do.”

What Peggy likes best about running her Interiors by Decorating Den franchise:
"Being my own boss, taking pride in the work that I do with my clients, working with my husband as partner and daughter as office administrator."

Most memorable moment:
“Being honored as Franchise Owner of the Year and taking over the regional manager position in 1999.”

Business Goals:
She would like to add another decorator to her staff and turn over more clients to her existing decorator, to have more time to spend on her regional manager duties.

Advice to those considering entering a career in interior decorating:
“This is not a ‘frivolous’ job.  You must love to work with people and be able to make decisions:
decorative ones and business ones.  Be disciplined enough to work for yourself.  Known not to take rejection personally.  And have fun!”
