Red the color that symbolizes heat and fire; passion and love; energy and excitement, is a powerful stimulant for artists.  Currently there is a play on Broadway titled “Red” based on the life of the 20th Century master artist Mark Rothko.  It is said that the modern painting to which Rothko felt most deeply attached was Henri Matisse’s Red Studio, which he recalled studying everyday for months.

People who appreciate red are passionate, exciting and fearless.  Working red into the decorating of a room requires daring tempered with restraint, the way Decorating Den Interior Decorator Nancy Barrett injected color and élan into her clients’ unfinished lower level.  They asked for a fun place with an “art gallery vibe” for entertaining friends.Setting the 21st Century modern tone of the room was the colorful piece of abstract art Nancy chose as an area rug, which defined the seating area and added visual warmth.  A sleek red sofa takes center stage while a pair of black leather chairs and a triangular purple ottoman play supporting roles.  Red shows up again in a lampshade.  Another dramatic prop is the fabulous oval mirror.

A crystal pendant hangs over an amorphous glass and wood table.  Woven wood shades were chosen to add texture with the geometric pattern repeated in the shoji screens that soften the bare wall.  Practical stainless steel bar stools and laminate-topped tables complete this vibrant entertaining space.
